Promoting Disability Rights and Services: A Project for Russia
March 16-21, 2018
About the Project:
This program introduces the tools U.S. disability advocates and NGOs use to lobby decision makers and businesses to improve accessibility and accommodations at the national, state, and local levels, and will provide examples of successful public awareness campaigns. It will also focus on the best practices of U.S. government officials, city planners, and NGOs on improving accessibility in an urban environment. The program highlights economic approaches to accessibility and familiarizes participants with an incentive-disincentive approach.
Project Context:
The Human Rights Watch has identified obstacles to participation in society and a lack of disability-friendly infrastructure as primary concerns facing Russia’s disabled population. The burden of this issue, in combination with an economic situation worsened by trade sanctions, make disability rights in Russia a prominent problem, which requires solving.
