Promoting Civic Engagement for High-Risk Youth: A Regional Project for Asia

About the Delegation

Participants from Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam will visit Jacksonville to gain exposure to the activities of federal, state and local agencies involved in countering violent extremism in the United States, as well as an examination of the major policies and practices governing these agencies. The participants will also learn about community engagement initiatives and ways that communities cooperate to prevent at‑risk youth and individuals from engaging in radical behaviors.

During their exchange program in Jacksonville, the delegates will Investigate how civil rights and liberties are protected and balanced within the context of preventing criminal activity and examine measures States use to combat gang recruitment and violence. A special emphasis will be placed on Police Engagement with Youth, Juvenile and Restorative Justice Programs, and Youth Leadership Programs at the local level.

About the International Leadership Program

The IVLP is a professional exchange program that seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders. Over the last 70 years, the IVLP has developed into the premier professional exchange program in the U.S. and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. Each year, 200 emerging leaders from 70+ countries tour Northeast Florida through the IVLP.
